Themes in Catch-22
In Catch-22, Joseph Heller explores the value of life and morality and the absurdity of war through his contrasting characterizations of Milo Minderbinder and Yossarian, the military base setting, and the conflict between Yossarian and Colonel Cathcart. Catch-22 is a satire on the bureaucratic nature of the military during World War II. Throughout Catch-22, Heller explores different characterââ¬â¢s reactions to the insane and arbitrary nature of the military bureaucracy. The protagonist, Yossarian, desires above all to preserve his life. However, his life is continually threatened by the increasing number of missions Colonel Cathcart, the principle antagonist of Catch-22, requires him to fly. Heller characterizes Milo Minderbinder through the physiognomy of his last name. Minderbinder combines two of Miloââ¬â¢s characteristics ââ¬â ââ¬Å"mindâ⬠and ââ¬Å"bindâ⬠. Milo has the lowly job of mess hall officer when he arrives on the military base in Pianosa. Milo explains to Yossarian that his goal is ââ¬Å"give the men in this squadron the best meals in the whole worldâ⬠(64). Milo creates an international syndicate that makes money by trading between the companies it owns. Even Yossarian frequently fails to understand how such a system is possible. Milo explains the system behind the syndicate: ââ¬Å"I make a profit of three quarter cents apiece when I sell [the eggs] to me and a profit of two and three quarter cents apiece when I buy them back from me. Thatââ¬â¢s a total profit of six cents an eggâ⬠(230). However, what starts as a brilliant scheme to make money by buying food becomes sidelined when Milo begins selling information to both the Americans and the Germans. Heller explains Miloââ¬â¢s ability to manipulate both sides: ââ¬Å"His planes were able to steal over in a sneak attack without alerting the German antiaircraft gunners; and since Milo knew about the attack, he was able to alert the German anti-aircraft gunners in sufficient time for them to begin firing accurately the moment the planes came into rangeâ⬠(255). Milo convinces the Germans to pay him for every American plane they shoot down, and convinces the Americans to pay him for every target they destroy. Because both sides of the war pay him for their efforts, Milo symbolizes the absurdity and arbitrary nature of the war. While Milo uses the war to make profit, Yossarian does his best to escape the absurdity of the war. Heller characterizes Yossarian through a flashback scene. During the Siege of Avignon, Yossarianââ¬â¢s friend Snowden dies in Yossarianââ¬â¢s arms. While in the hospital, Yossarian reflects on the lesson that incident taught him: ââ¬Å"Man was matter, that was Snowdenââ¬â¢s secret. Drop him out a window and heââ¬â¢ll fall. Set fire to him and heââ¬â¢ll burn. Bury him and heââ¬â¢ll rot, like other kinds of garbage. The spirit gone, man is garbageâ⬠(440). The lesson Yossarian learns about the value of life from his friend dying in his arms characterizes Yossarian and presents the central meaning of Catch-22. Earlier, while introducing Havermeyer, the lead bombardier of Yossarianââ¬â¢s squadron, Heller explains, ââ¬Å"Havermeyer was a lead bombardier who never missed. Yossarian was a lead bombardier who had been demoted because he no longer gave a damn whether he missed or not. He had decided to live forever or die in the attempt, and his only mission each time he went up was to come down aliveâ⬠(29). Yossarianââ¬â¢s desire to live epitomizes Hellerââ¬â¢s central theme that life is valuable. The bureaucratic culture of the military base in Catch-22 represents blatant disregard of life, and by contrast, the value of life and morality. In the military base, men can be court-marshaled simply because they are disliked by one of their superior officers. Clevinger, one of Yossarianââ¬â¢s friends, who Heller describes as being ââ¬Å"one of those people with lots of intelligence and no brainsâ⬠(68), is court-marshaled, and, as Heller states, ââ¬Å"the only thing missing was something to charge him withâ⬠(71). Clevingerââ¬â¢s trial is ridiculous; Lieutenant Scheisskopf spends so much time correcting the way Clevinger speaks that Clevinger cannot say a word in his defense. Heller goes as far as to say, ââ¬Å"Clevinger was guilty, of course, or he would not have been accused, and since the only way to prove it was to find him guilty, it was their patriotic duty to do soâ⬠(81). In such an environment, where men are convicted of crimes simply for the revenge or amusement of their superiors, life becomes absurd. Through contrast with such an environment, Heller presents the actions of characters who try to separate themselves from the meaningless bureaucracy of the military base and live on the basis that life and morality have meaning. The central conflict of Catch-22 is the conflict between the opposing moralities represented by Colonel Cathcart and Yossarian. Colonel Cathcartââ¬â¢s greatest desire is to become a military general. Cathcart pursues promotion in an altogether unscrupulous manner. Heller explains that ââ¬Å"forcing his men to fly more missions than everyone else was the most tangible achievement he had going for himâ⬠(214). Cathcart sets his goals ahead of morality. He is willing to force hundreds of soldiers to risk their lives for his promotion. Heller appears to have little respect for Cathcart, ââ¬Å"Colonel Cathcart did not have a chance in hell of becoming a generalâ⬠(215). Yossarian, on the other hand, is unwilling to make a decision that would benefit him at the expense of the lives of other soldiers. In response to Yossarianââ¬â¢s unwillingness to participate in the war, Colonel Korn offers him the choice to be sent home with an honorable discharge or be court-marshaled. During the process of presenting the plan to Yossarian, Korn establishes the basis of Yossarianââ¬â¢s later refusal of the plan: ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢d have to be a fool to throw it all away just for a moral principleâ⬠(428). Yossarian initially accepts the deal, in what he later describes as a ââ¬Å"moment of weaknessâ⬠(441). Later, however, Yossarian realizes that the deal is ââ¬Å"best for Cathcart, Korn and me, not for everyoneâ⬠(442). On moral grounds, Yossarian refuses a contract that presented him with an opportunity to obtain safety and honor. By contrasting Cathcartââ¬â¢s unscrupulous pursuit of promotion with Yossarianââ¬â¢s willingness to jeopardize his life for the sake of morality, Heller demonstrates the importance of life and morality. Catch-22 is an undeniable classic for Hellerââ¬â¢s presentation of a man who finds meaning and morality within a setting that promotes absurdity. Heller contrasts the characterization of Milo Minderbinder with Yossarian, sets Catch-22 in a military base, and establishes a conflict of ideals between Colonel Cathcart and Yossarian in order to highlight the meaningful nature of life and morality.

The Current System Of Abortion - 1348 Words
Similar to ââ¬Å"adolescentâ⬠and ââ¬Å"adult,â⬠the terms ââ¬Å"embryoâ⬠and ââ¬Å"fetusâ⬠are used to describe different stages in human development. It would be preposterous to consider an individual to be more human the older and bigger they get. With this, all innocent human life is equally deserving of respect and has the right to live. The current system surrounding abortion fails to ensure that this right is equally distributed among the earliest stages of human life. In order to ensure that this right is protected in all stages of human development, the current system must be revised. Abortion policy should be reformed because the current system disregards alternative solutions, endangers the mother, and lacks proper limitations. The current system promotes abortion as being the easy way out and disregards alternative solutions. Gun Violence Free Essays
Many of us have heard many times, ââ¬Å"Guns donââ¬â¢t kill people on their own, it takes a person to pull the trigger. â⬠Even if people find this statement to be true, guns are an issue that needs to be addressed. A gun is simply an easy tool that people can use and manipulate with hardly any thought. We will write a custom essay sample on Gun Violence or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many suggest taking away guns and promoting peace through government help while others think that the guns are what keep them safe. Situations arise everyday where people have witnessed, or know someone who has been effected by gun violence. Sadly many of the cases result in death or severe injuries. Even though this is a very controversial topic, many people would agree with the fact that guns are an easy means to commit a crime. Guns in general are too easy for people to obtain and use for violent deviant acts. Not only are guns responsible for violent deaths, but a considerable amount of accidents take place every year do to improper equipment or even placing them in unsecure places. There needs to be better ways to regulate and control gun distribution around the world. If not, people run the risks of witnessing these acts or even being part of them. Guns are a very touchy topic of discussion. The differing opinions dealing with the control of use can often lead to even bigger discussions of the reasons for owning them. In the forefront of the pro-guns argument is a feeling of self-defense. Being able to protect oneself in the event of an altercation with an armed individual is a very valuable piece to the freedoms given to citizens as members of the United States. Some feel as though if no one owns them, the problem is completely alleviated. There is a bit of debate surrounding both stances but for the most part it is understood that a complete eradication of arms is rather improbable. Last year, a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found more than 1. 7 million children live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns (momlogic). This, however, sparks multiple instances in the minds of those with the anti-gun mindset that having no guns at all would have caused no one to be injured and possibly given someone another chance to live. In the case of children, there is no ability to distinguish what is harmless and what could potentially hurt them. When guns are brought into the picture, that mental incapacity seems to grow exponentially. In 2009 around fourteen million guns were sold in the United States legally. However there are about four hundred million guns owned legally in the United States. With that being said, thirty-five percent of American homes have at least one or more guns that are legally owned. However, back in 2007 officials confiscated about seven hundred illegal guns from people and bought about five hundred and fifty six from many dealers through out the country. These facts alone show that there are a lot of guns in the states and measures are being taken to help lower the number of illegal guns. Guns are tools that have many issues and problems that follow them. Guns have been used in many untraceable murder cases, adult and child accidents, and even have been used as a means to hide the real evidence. With respect to the child deaths, many of these could have been prevented. In July of 2008, it was reported in Jackson Mississippi, that a three year-old toddler fatally shot himself while finding a gun in his parents car while waiting in a gas station parking lot (momlogic). There has also been a case where a 10-year-old son of a New York City police officer died after shooting himself in the face with his fatherââ¬â¢s loaded revolver. The boy found the weapon on a shelf in the basement while looking for a ball his mom had hidden (momlogic). The Childrenââ¬â¢s Defense Fund report on children and gun violence shows that the number of children and teenagers killed in one year dropped below 4000 for the first time since 1988. The number, 3792, equals just over 10 children every day (sbcoalition). Some may feel that these accidents are due to sheer chance and misfortune on behalf of the child. That may hold some bearing but in the case of how well these guns were hid from the children, the weight is greater. Sometimes the incident doesnââ¬â¢t involve children. Teens are often targets just as easily as children are for gun misuse. Sadly, they sometimes know what they are doing. Whether they are showing off their dadââ¬â¢s new handgun to a friend and forgetting its loaded and blowing their friendââ¬â¢s head off or even playing ââ¬Å"gamesâ⬠such as Russian Roulette, they usually have some idea what they are getting into in comparison to the younger aged kids. The overall national rate of child handgun homicide victims was 1. 20 per 100,000 (sbcoalition). Many people wonder if there is a way to fix these issues, sadly a way to resolve them hasnââ¬â¢t been put in to action yet. Even though there are no rules officially in effect, preventive measures are probably the best way to combat a problem as this. To ensure that children donââ¬â¢t endanger themselves by what seems to the youthful eye to be a toy, guns should be required by owners to be stored in a gun safe if they have, or expect to ever have small children in their home at any time. This alone can effectively lower the number of these mournful incidents that we hear about in the news and media. Although none widely implemented, there are many ways that can fix these problems that have been overlooked. By taking all the guns that are being sold and making them subject to annual inspection, those who own guns will be forced to keep on their toes. By having them inspected, it allows trained individuals to access the guns determine the uses and how often the gun is being used. Also harsher punishments could be implemented to keep people in line. By doing this, we are scaring people into making appropriate choices with their guns. A trade in program ran by the local authorities could also be a good way to keep tabs on guns. By offering people new guns if they trade in ones that are illegal, we gain the means to being able to conduct and make people subject to inspections. Within the trade in program, there could also be an option to restore or give new serial numbers to ââ¬Å"black-marketâ⬠guns. This option would benefit those who wish to keep the same gun and will also give the authorities a way to identify what was once an unknown in the gun databases. Even though these are great ideas, there are always people who will say that it is not far and an unjust way of managing guns within the nation. One person might argue that these new ideas infringe upon their rights, specifically their right to own firearms. What these people seem to overlook is that, their rights are still being honored. These ideas to regulate guns simply make people subject to inspection if they want to own them. In some cases, it even offers people guns. In some cases someone might also argue that their privacy is being taken away. People could consider guns private property and being forced to show them and have them inspected is in fact invasion of their privacy. With that statement being said, people have got to understand that by allowing their privacy to be invaded for solely that reason is in fact making their lives much safer. There are always going to be those people who are going to argue that it takes away their dignity, but many would agree that giving up their dignity in respect to helping reduce gun violence is worth it. However, people can obtain them too easily. With this being said, people should focus on ways to let people keep their rights while at the same time, regulate how they are obtained and used. During a one-year study, researchers have found that about 88,649 people died due to a gun related incidents. Peopleââ¬â¢s lives are valuable and deserved to be protected. People have came up with numerous amounts of ideas as to regulate gun control but, non have really focused on concealed weapon license, extra education classes, or even finding ways to track people and their use of their gun. This is a very controversial subject and people have many different opinions that all are valid and relate to the topic as a whole. There are some arguments that people have as to their right, safety, and some even go as far to say altering their rights is taking away their dignity. Since 1865, President Abraham Lincoln, President James Garfield, President William McKinley, and President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and more recently, the Columbine High School massacre, the Beltway sniper attacks, and the Virginia Tech massacre have also fueled debate over gun policies. According to the report, prevalence of homicide and violent crime is greatest in urban areas of the United States. In metropolitan areas, the homicide rate in 2005 was 6. 1 per 100,000 compared with 3. in non-metropolitan counties (fbi. gov). In America, cities with populations greater than 250,000, the mean homicide rate was 12. 1 per 100,000 (fbi. gov), and the rates of gun-related homicides are greater in southern and western states. In America, to get a gun is somewhat easy. It is not expensive and there are many firearms available. According to the report, among juveniles, the minor under the age of 16, 17, or 18, serving in correctional facilities, 86% owned a gun at some time, and 66% acquiring their first gun by age 14 (fbi. ov). Juveniles most often acquire guns from family, friends, drug dealers, and street contacts. In inner city, youth cite ââ¬Å"self-protection from enemiesâ⬠as the top reason for carrying a gun. Moreover, the mind of youth is immature, and they usually be impetuous and easily given to passions or act on impulse and without due consideration. This is shown in statistics that most violent crimes related to guns were committed by the youths. Even though gun itself is neutral, we cannot deny the potential danger elated with guns. Guns are meant to protect the people, but it often used as a tool to commit violent crimes. Therefore, establishing the laws and the limitations to prevention the youth to touch guns is important. Also, families and schools should educate and guide our youths more carefully. Donââ¬â¢t let our society become more and more dangerous and give our offspring a safe living space by promoting stricter firearm controls and zero tolerance on youth gun possession. How to cite Gun Violence, Papers Gun Violence Free Essays Gun Violence Gun violence, in the United States especially, is a growing concern and highly debated topic when the discussion of gun control is brought up. Here are several facts that I found to be troubling, and even disturbing. * The average of guns deaths in the annual is less than 50 in Japan compared to more than 10,000 in the United States. We will write a custom essay sample on Gun Violence or any similar topic only for you Order Now (http://www. heedinggodscall. org/content/pfctoolkit-10) The number of gun related deaths in the United States dwarfs that of Japan annually, perhaps a sign of the overwhelming amount of gang violence in the U. S. * The per capita gun death rate in Louisiana is the highest annually in the United States at 19. 04%. The lowest per capita death rate is help in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Hawaii at a mere 2. 02%. (http://www. heedinggodscall. org/content/pfctoolkit-10) Per 100,000 people, almost twenty percent of the population would die in a gun related homicide. That number seems incredibly high. * Lifetime U. S. edical costs for gunshot injuries are an estimated $2. 3 billion, with U. S. taxpayers paying $1. 1 billion, almost half of the total. (http://www. heedinggodscall. org/content/pfctoolkit-10) In an effort to keep that number down, it might be smart to put a little more funding into law enforcement to keep guns out of criminalââ¬â¢s hands in the first place. * Guns in a household triple the risk of a family member being killed by a gun. (http://www. ncbi. nlm. nih. ov/pubmed/8371731) I donââ¬â¢t know how I feel about this statistic as the use of a firearm for protection can save a life even though this stat says that the gun in the household makes it immediately more dangerous. * A 1993 study gathered that 2. 45 million crimes are thwarted by guns in the United States every year. (LaPierre, Wayne (1994). Guns, Crime, and Freedom. Regnery Publishing. p. 23. ISBN 0-89526-477-3. ) This is the other side of gun possession seen as a positive. With guns as a protection, regular citizens can protect themselves from potential danger. How to cite Gun Violence, Papers

Analysis of the poem Belfast Confetti Essay Example For Students
Analysis of the poem Belfast Confetti Essay The title ââ¬ËBelfast Confettiââ¬â¢ is very informative it tells us that it is in Belfast, capital of Northern Ireland. Belfast is a beautiful place filled with stunning scenery and fields; it is also a very religious and politically minded city. ââ¬ËConfettiââ¬â¢ gives us a first impression of happiness, joy, celebration and special occasions but ââ¬Ëconfettiââ¬â¢ in this poem means a radically different thing, the complete opposite of joy and happiness. The poem is about an Irish civilian caught in the middle of a dirty minded terrorist attack, many innocent people like himself were caught in the rain of fire that these terrorist inflicted on the streets of Belfast. He and the innocent civilians of Belfast find themselves in a dehumanising, frustrating situation because they could get charged their own lives due to the terrorist assault, i think a great deal of impotence must be surrounding these people because they have no reason or fault to be caught in the middle of this hell hole surrounded by arm personnel, tanks and military objects with no escape. The structure of this poem is irregular and presented in a unusual fashion. In the poem its structure is presented in one long line and then a couple of words in the next sentence and carries on like that throughout the poem ââ¬Ëtrying to finish a sentenceââ¬â¢, this reflects in the chaotic state that the streets of Belfast find itself in.à The terrorist have attempted due to political reasons and the military personnel and authorities have interfered because there is a huge risk of death and fear for the innocent bystanders and they are also there to lock up these wanted terrorist and exterminate them from putting the country at risk. It is unfair for the civilians because they could lose their lives when they donââ¬â¢t really deserve to lose them; they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and there is no escape from this epicentre of conflict filled with flying object being bombarded at them such as nuts, bolts and nails which could really cause some damage w hen fired at a high speed. The main character in this poem is the innocent civilian (speaker) he is local and we know that because he knows the name of all the streets. He is a innocent, uninvolved civilian getting on with his everyday life and unintentionally been caught in this mess, he just wants to live a peaceful life but the terrorists donââ¬â¢t allow it because he and many others are victims of this. The terrorist just want to do as much damage as they want and destroy. The authorities are also being very intimidating by bombarding these shocked and scared people with questions. The poet is very clever in the way he uses his techniques of words to marry the significance of the poem and the way he is showing us when we read it. For example he uses punctuation to show the conflict that is happening in the poem, the poem also shows a paragraph with no punctuation, this is confusing just like the poem itself ââ¬ËBelfast is like a paragraph with no punctuationââ¬â¢. He also uses the names of streets which are named after famous battles and wars. He uses words like labyrinth representing that there is no way out or if there is a way its very complicated to escape.

Why do men resort to domestic violence Essay Example For Students
Why do men resort to domestic violence Essay Introduction to Sociology Research- Paper1One of the most overlooked forms of violence in todays society is domestic violence. Domestic violence is most likely to occur behind closed doors, which is one of the main reasons why domestic violence is not given that much attention. In most cases domestic violence is the silent, ugly side of dating and people do not like to talk about it.Due to the fact that domestic violence is becoming more common over the years warrants more and more research to help with the ongoing problem. Why do men in the United States resort to domestic violence? Domestic violence is an intense or furious often-destructive action or force within the household. Domestic violence is measured by any physical or verbal abuse. This abuse could be used against any person within the family, or even a girlfriend or boyfriend. Physical or verbal abuse from an ex-girlfriend or an ex-boyfriend can also be considered a case of domestic violence. Domestic violence may be the cause of a fatal shooting or it could just simply be a man telling his wife that she is worthless, while he orders her around using profanity on a consistent basis. Mother Found Stabbed To Death In Closet. Her husband is now facing charges after the victims body was discovered early Friday morning. The couple have two little girls, but it is not known if they were at the house during the stabbing. The victim, Bebe White, was a white female at the age of 25 and her husband, Vincent White, is a black male at the age of 34. The Whites had a history of domestic problems, said officials. Vincent White was just released from prison last year after serving two years for domestic violence, assault, and abduction. According to police and court records, Vincent White has had legal problems dating back to the late 1980s. Vincent Whites father blamed what happened on his sons drug habit, however he did not go into what type of drugs. In this article there were a few strengths. I believe finding out the age difference between the couple could have some meaning behind it. They were a mixed couple, which could also be the reason for some domestic troubles. The victims husband had some drug issues, however the article did not specify what type or types of drugs the murderer was into. Knowing that Vincent White was doing drugs is a solid strength, but since the article did not go into detail it could also be considered a weakness. The second article, Violence: The Silent, Ugly Side Of Dating, by Dennis Wilken-TGI Staff Writer. Porch and her staff go out to the high schools to discuss teen dating violence to help the younger generation opens their eyes to domestic violence. Porch is the teen co-coordinator for the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline. We talk to both male and female students. Violence starts by someone thinking they have the right to control another person, Porch said. Porch goes on to say that the classic component to the program is education and they get the information out because no one deserves to be hurt. Porch also issued plenty of danger signs: excessive jealousy, isolation, sexual coercion, threats, name calling, not allowing you to make any relationship decisions, intimidation, not taking responsibility, partner checking up, and changing the way they dress. Even though this article is about a program to help the younger generation, it offered a lot of red flag warnings, which were absolutely the strengths of my second article. The weakness of my article would have to be hard facts, there were none, but I felt this was an important article because it shows how much domestic violence has come over the years and gives women a lot of danger signs to look for when being in a relationship. .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 , .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .postImageUrl , .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 , .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:hover , .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:visited , .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:active { border:0!important; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:active , .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21 .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc3c46a1db4b92c4cba3030851ce57d21:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Smoking2 EssayMy third article was a shocking one. Female Abuse Continues In Pregnancy. Women who suffer from domestic violence by their partners are often beaten after getting pregnant and have given birth, which put their babies endanger also. More than 2,600 women in North Carolina participated in an 18-month study. The study found that about 7 percent suffered physical domestic violence during a sample 12-month period, and the abuse continued after becoming pregnant and gave birth. This study implies that intimate partner domestic violence is occurring in the immediate postnatal period, and an opportunity exists for pediatric health care practitioners to identify this domestic violence. It is important to note that even this relatively low prevalence translates into the abuse of more than 3,000 new mothers annually in North Carolina, study author Sandra Martin of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The strengths of my third article, Female Abuse Continues In Pregnancy, are the statistics from their studies. Knowing that domestic violence continues during pregnancy is also a strength. The weakness of this article is the fact that the studies were done in North Carolina and not the whole United States. Another weakness would be no mention of age, race, or religion.
